As the Naked Bible Club got together last night the discussion made it's way to Job, and apparently there is a theory that Job wasn't an actual person, that it's a fable.
WHAT!?!?
I'd never heard that before.
I scoured the interweb looking for definitive proof that the book of Job is not a historical of a real person, but couldn't find anything solid.
Anyone with a fancy Bible degree care to weigh in and set the record straight?
I would like to know theycome up with that theory? We got to remember that the bible is the true Word of God and and God breathed. God would not put things like that in the bible if it weren't true
ReplyDeleteHey Jerome,
ReplyDeleteThose that believe say it's a parable, like the ones Jesus told in the New Testament (Prodigal Son, Good Samaritan).
As for how they came up with it, there are a number of reasons they say Job is a parable.
- The Land of Uz (a fictional place that doesn't appear anywhere else in scripture or history)
- The way God intereacts with Job is unlike anywhere else in the OT.
- The way it is written is like poetry/a play
- The numbers 7 & 3 appear repeatedly (as was custom for parables of the day)
